The Legacy of Wild Turkey Bourbon
Wild Turkey’s roots trace back to 1869 and the Ripy Brothers Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, operating on a bluff above the Kentucky River in Anderson County a geographic position that delivers the dramatic seasonal temperature swings that aggressive barrel aging demands. The Wild Turkey name itself entered the American whiskey vocabulary in 1940 when Thomas McCarthy, an executive at Austin Nichols spirits company, brought bottles of his company’s 101-proof straight bourbon on a wild turkey hunting trip in South Carolina and shared them with fellow hunters who immediately asked where they could buy more. Austin Nichols formally adopted the Wild Turkey name for the brand in 1942, and the distillery has operated continuously under that identity ever since through the brand’s acquisition by Pernod Ricard in 1980 and its subsequent purchase by Gruppo Campari in 2009, which owns and operates the distillery today. Through every ownership transition, one constant has held: the Russell family has remained at the production helm without interruption.
Jimmy Russell joined Wild Turkey as a distiller in 1954 and has never left — making him the longest-tenured master distiller at a single American whiskey distillery in history, with over seven decades of continuous production experience accumulated at one facility. His son Eddie Russell joined the operation in 1981 and currently serves as co-master distiller alongside his father, making Wild Turkey the only major Kentucky distillery operating under a verified father-son master distillery team with combined tenure exceeding a century at the same location. The Wild Turkey house style is built on a high-rye mash bill significantly higher rye content than the Kentucky average combined with a lower barrel entry proof of 110, well below the legal maximum of 125, which the Russells have maintained as a deliberate quality decision that preserves more of the grain character in the finished whiskey. Barrels are aged in new charred American white oak with a number 4 char the heaviest standard char level used by any major Kentucky producer in limestone-constructed Camp Nelson rickhouses perched on the Anderson County bluffs, where extreme thermal cycling drives deep barrel penetration and the concentrated, bold flavor profile that defines every expression in the lineup.
