The Van Winkle family’s connection to Kentucky bourbon stretches back to Julian “Pappy” Van Winkle Sr., who began his career as a salesman for the W.L. Weller & Sons wholesale house in Louisville in the late 1800s before eventually acquiring the Stitzel Distillery and merging it with Weller to form the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Shively, Kentucky in 1935. Stitzel-Weller became one of the most celebrated distilleries in American whiskey history, producing wheated bourbon a softer, wheat-forward mash bill that substituted wheat for the traditional rye grain under brands including W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald, and Cabin Still across four decades of operation.
